“Consensual” by Heavenly Beat // Talent (2012)
The boys of Beach Fossils have been my MVPs this year with their band (the “Shallow” 7”) and solo project work (DIIV and Heavenly Beat). Zachary Cole Smith’s DIIV is already a frontrunner for my favorite album of the year, but not to be outdone, Beach Fossil bandmate, John Pena’s Heavenly Beat has released one hell of an album in the form of “Talent” (streaming now on Captured Tracks’ Soundcloud). The album is loaded with sun soaked Balearic pop sounds that blend effortlessly with jangly guitars and dreamy atmospherics. “Consensual” is an album highlight that deserves to be included on any self respecting summer mixtape. It certainly makes these dog days of summer feel a little more tolerable. Highly recommended.
